The polls have closed on the referendum in Dona Ana county, New Mexico on the imposition of a supplemental sales tax to help fund the construction of Spaceport America. Provisional results indicate a narrow YES vote, by a mere 204 votes or 8,781 or 50.6% 'yes' to 8,577 or 49.4% 'no'. However, there are still another 541 provisional ballots to be counted, so it could still go down to the line. Final results should be available by Friday. More details on the Spaceports blog.
I am slightly puzzled that this was done in the way that it was -- proposing the implementation of a supplementary sales tax in one of the poorest areas of the state. I would have thought that an additional property tax would have been an easier sell: better related to the ability to pay, and to the benefits of increased local property values that the spaceport construction would bring.
